Things to do The Wight Concierge October 2025

October is one of our favourite months on the Isle of Wight. The summer crowds have thinned, the beaches feel peaceful again, and the countryside turns a warm patchwork of copper and gold. It’s the perfect time for a slower escape,  a chance to enjoy the Island at its most atmospheric.

If you’re wondering what’s on this October on the Isle of Wight, here’s what we at The Wight Concierge recommend.

Autumn Walks and the Island’s Famous Walking Festival

Autumn is walking season here, and this year the Isle of Wight Walking Festival runs from 4–12 October 2025. It’s more than just a series of hikes; it’s a way of seeing the Island through local eyes. Guided walks take you off the beaten path into hidden villages, historic trails and wild stretches of coast. Some are gentle strolls with a story, others are more adventurous treks that reward you with spectacular views. For us, it’s the best way to immerse yourself in the Island’s beauty at this time of year.

Even if you don’t join a guided walk, October is perfect for exploring woodlands such as Borthwood Copse or Parkhurst Forest, where you may spot our elusive red squirrels. Out on the wetlands at Newtown Nature Reserve, migrating birds make this season especially lively for wildlife watchers.

Festivals and October Highlights

Culture and community events carry on long after summer here. The Isle of Wight Literary Festival (9–12 October) transforms Cowes’ historic Northwood House into a hub of ideas and conversation, with authors, thinkers and speakers from far and wide.

Music lovers are spoilt for choice too: the IOW Blues Weekend (3–6 October) sets Norton Grange swaying with rhythm and soul, while mid-month brings the Soul & Reggae Weekender (17–20 October) in Ryde, promising feel-good evenings by the sea.

Halloween Isle of Wight 2025

For something different, lace up for the Dash in the Dark on 4 October — a glowing 5k fun run at the County Showground, supporting the Air Ambulance. It’s light-hearted, energetic and a brilliant community moment.

And of course, as the month winds towards Halloween, the Island embraces its playful spooky side. “Isle of Fright” events pop up across attractions, from ghostly tales to pumpkin trails, making it great fun for families as well as those who like their October nights a little eerie.

Autumn Attractions

Not all of October’s pleasures are tied to specific dates. Some places simply feel more magical in the autumn light. Osborne House, once Queen Victoria’s seaside retreat, is especially atmospheric when the gardens are quieter. The dramatic views over The Needles and Alum Bay are breathtaking in the crisper weather, and the Isle of Wight Steam Railway becomes even more evocative with the cool air mixing with steam clouds.

Meanwhile, family favourites like Tapnell Farm, Amazon World and the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary remain open and are a reliable option for half-term days out.

The Wight Concierge Tips for October Visits

A few words of advice if you’re planning your stay: bring layers and good shoes, as the weather can turn quickly. Check attraction opening times before you travel, as some move to shorter hours after summer. And if you’ve got your eye on a special event whether it’s the Literary Festival or a Walking Festival trail do book ahead as spaces can be limited.

Finally, allow yourself to enjoy the Island at a gentler pace. October is not about cramming in attractions, but about breathing in sea air, wandering quiet lanes, and savouring a different side of Island life.

Why Visit in October?

We may be biased, but we think October is when the Isle of Wight feels most authentic. There’s still plenty happening, walks, music, festivals, family adventures, yet you’ll also find space to slow down. Whether you come for a weekend or a longer autumn break, you’ll leave with fresh air in your lungs and a little Island magic in your heart.
